Russia's Alexander Povetkin warmed-up for his IBF world heavyweight title fight against champion Wladimir Klitschko with a unanimous points win over America's Jason Estrada on Saturday.

"The fight went well in principle and after my time away from the ring with injury, this was good preparation," said Povetkin.

"I want to beat Klitschko and I want to be world champion - that is my dream."

The 29-year-old from Moscow was scheduled to face IBF and WBO champion Klitschko in December last year, but a twisted ankle in training forced him to postpone the showdown.

Povetkin remains the IBF mandatory challenger and all three judges awarded him the win against Estrada, who struggled to contain the hard-hitting Russian.

"I am disappointed with the fight, I thought I would have got a bit closer," said Estrada.

Povetkin is set meet Klitschko before September 13, provided Klitschko beats Britain's David Haye in June, and the Russian 2004 Olympic champion had few problems over ten rounds against Estrada.

With only three knock-outs to his name after 15 wins and now two defeats since he went pro in 2004, Estrada had never been more than ten rounds.

He finished the fight in serious trouble under a flurry of Povetkin punches just before the bell at the end of the tenth.

This was Povetkin's 17th straight win on his unblemished record since turning professional in 2005 and he has beaten former champion Chris Byrd on his way to becoming mandatory IBF challenger.

There was very little between the two in the first three rounds with both fighters landing punches and Povetkin looked sharp even though his last fight was against Taurus Sykes in his native Russia in July last year.

Several times Povetkin came forward and threw a big punch only to leave his guard down and allow Estrada, from Rhode Island, the chance to hit back.

But by round seven Estrada was starting to tire, and Povetkin was clearly in control.

With just a minute remaining of the fight, Povetkin launched a final attempt at a knock-out and had Estrada in desperate trouble on the ropes before the final bell rang to save him further punishment.
